On the Passing of Hon. Barbara Brown

Today we mourn the loss of Founding Board Member and Past President, the Hon. Barbara Brown.

Barb was a central figure within IWIL. From the first class she was instrumental in developing the curriculum and programming. Barb attended almost every training session and steered the program every year for each IWIL Class. Barb served as a mentor and guide to countless women who sought elected office. She herself was a candidate for Illinois State Senate and held office as Clerk of the Circuit Court in Randolph County.

Barb Brown’s passing is not just a loss for IWIL, but for Illinois and for Democrats. If you attended the Democratic National Convention, you know Barb as the IL Delegate whip. Barb served in multiple leadership positions for Southern Illinois Democrats, including Chair of the Randolph County Democrats, President of the Southern Illinois Democratic Women, 12th Congressional District State Central Committeewoman and Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois. Barb earned a doctorate in Political Science and was a faculty member in the Political Science department at SIU for 18 years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who knew and cherished Barb, especially to her husband Dick and their three boys and two grandchildren.

IWIL has named the annual Southern Illinois program in Barb’s honor and will establish a scholarship to assist with travel expenses for women participating in IWIL from Southern Illinois.
